Matthew Hautamaki (ionmatika)• Founder
As a graduate of Icon Collective I have been DJing events starting in 2014. It's fun to see people's eyes light up when I play songs that they wanted to hear but didn't know they needed. Reading a room is like breathing for me. I started my music journey in LA. Moving back to Grand Rapids because of family was the greatest thing I ever could have done for myself. This team is strong because I train them correctly. My experience in Hollywood pushed me to new levels. I have my hand on everything in this company. When you care, It really shows. We like to help our students reach their goals.
Bill Davis (Dahllabillz) • Operations/Lead DJ
I've been a DJ for as long as I can remember. From house parties to events like bars and you name it! I like to mix in songs that keep the dancefloor moving. I listen to the crowd when needed and I can mix in songs on the fly. I've helped NewSwivel grow through the years with events everywhere in Michigan. I've probably seen every venue at this point and I love to get people dancing. I work the mic to keep people entertained but it's always classy. I can mix anything. Just show me the playlist and I'll have a show for you.
Johnny Morabito (JED) • DJ/MC
I’ve been a live performer since I got my guitar at age ten. Nothing makes me happier than to share my energy with others. Whether it’s a festival stage, club, wedding, or house party, the crowd is my lifeblood. Show me what music you love, and I’ll put a spell on you and make you dance until your feet hurt!
"DJs define the party. The vibe of the room, having the tools to keep people on the dance floor. That's what we do!" - ionmatika
Do I need to know anything about DJing going into this class?
No, you don't need to know anything about DJing before we start. However, you will be sent a video to watch that should get you prepared for our classes. This should answer most, if not all of your questions about our program.
If you do know anything about DJing or have already started. We would love to hear where you're at. Our goal is not to waste your time but to get you where you need to be in your career.
What do I need to bring to the class?
1. Headphones
We suggest DJ headphones. You can checkout our guide to headphones here:
2. USB stick or SD card
We suggest that you have memory for at least 64gb worth of music. Bring any music you currently already own. Check out our guide for storage here:
3. Sign up for Tidal, Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Music, Beatport.
We pull music from all three of these streaming services. If you've already got them even better. Make sure to sign up for all of them for free.
4. Sign up for In-Music
You will need an In-Music account to connect to Denon decks. We use these decks because of their capability to connect to the internet and various other reasons.
How many students are there per teacher?
Our classes are small but start with 8 students. We currently only have 2 teachers per class. We do have different levels that we offer and there is only enough space for each level.
Do I need to buy my own DJ decks?
No, but we do recommend it. We provide all the gear in the classroom for you to use. Also, talk with us first. We might be able to help you get a deal. Pioneer or Denon, we know where to look.
What equipment are you using?
Our eco system is Denon. We understand that industry standard is normally Pioneer DJ but Denon's infrastructure makes it more convenient to teach. We do teach techniques that can be used on any DJ setup. If you have a custom deck. You can bring it in and we'll adjust to help you understand.
What will I be learning?
Each program builds upon the next. Even the first program will help you get an understanding to start DJing anywhere. We cater your experience to what we think you can handle. Our goal is to get you out there to play real shows and book.
What if I miss a class?
We can make up classes with you but you only get two rescheduled classes. This is more of a favor and a 1 on 1. We'll talk with you after missing a class to reschedule.
I have some experience already, Would this benefit me?
Absolutely, coaches are needed in every industry. The ability to pull from people that are on your level or more will make you a better DJ. We can adapt our training to help you get even better. Having an outside opinion can fine tune your live performance. Ask us about special deals for this.
Is there possibility of 1 on 1 ?
We do have 1 on 1 classes that can be scheduled through our app. Ask us about these times and we can give you a schedule for that. Group classes are less but a 1 on 1 experience can help you reach a higher level.
How long are the classes?
Our classes are 3 hours with a 30 minute break. Scheduled on Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday.
Are there any age restrictions?
Currently we can only offer classes to 18 and up. However we will be offering teen classes in the future and summer camps.
Can I bring food?
We don't allow food in our studio. Please keep all food in your backpack or out of site. You will be warned once and asked to leave after warned.
No drinks or gum either.
Are there any written tests?
We do have tests but they are mostly performances. There will be a terminology review for gear but that should be simple with study.
Do I need a Text book?
You will be given a text book upon arriving for you first class. We will be reviewing this and our online course work. With these two things we will show you how to grow your skills as a DJ. You can keep the book at the end of the training.
What is your refund policy?
There is no refunds. You are responsible for full payment upon signing our agreement. Our payment plan is there to help you afford this program. When you sign up, your spot is reserved. You are responsible for the full amount of the class.
If you choose to cancel before the next level we can stop payment for the next level or schedule you for another time. There is a $200 fee for doing this.
Can I pay in installments?
We have a payment plan based on each step of the DJ training system. Payments can be split by levels. Upon completion of the 1st level all payments for the second level is due. When the second level of the program is completed, the third level payment is due.
These payments are defined in the payment section when completing the agreement.
Why don't you use Pioneer?
We prefer Denon DJ because of the eco system. Both are great systems and eventually we might decide to change the decks. Prime 4+ has tons of features and are a great deck to start on. You will learn things that any deck/mixer can do.
Our Classroom
We have the experience to train you to become a world class DJ. Our DJs have played multiple stages and are ready to share their knowledge. After years of entertainment, our packages reflect what we believe to be fair to help you get on the stage.
